AI research lab inspired by computer's internal components
Construction work is currently underway on a new artificial intelligence research laboratory designed by PLP Architecture. Located in Shanghai, China, the building's overall form is inspired by a computer motherboard and CPU. The Shanghai World Laureates Association Artificial Intelligence Lab is part of a Lingang New Area district in the city that will host research and innovation, which also happens to be where the Ring project by Ennead Architects is being constructed. The building will be situated next to a lake and feature extensive landscaping. Its interior will measure 32,000 sq m (roughly 344,000 sq ft), which will be spread over the two distinct "motherboard" and "CPU" areas.
Decade Of Artificial Intelligence: A Summary
The world has seen a boom in the field of Artificial Intelligence in the past few years. The major reasons contributing to this is the availability of data and computing power. A lot of research has happened in the field of AI in the last decade and society has witnessed many amazing use cases. In the last decade, AI went mainstream because of the availability of hardware, courses, platforms, big companies taking workshops, etc. What our AI community has achieved in the last decade has set a strong foundation for the future.

Take a Deep Dive into NLP at ODSC APAC 2021
ODSC APAC 2021 is right around the corner this September 15–16th, and while there's something for everyone, NLP is sticking out as one of the focal points of this conference. Natural language processing is indeed special in the APAC region, namely because there's a greater need for diverse datasets, due to the number of different languages spoken in the region. This has lead researchers to develop novel and exciting techniques to address these concerns. At ODSC APAC in a few weeks, you'll be able to hear from these data scientists about NLP, and hear from some research institutions that focus on NLP Natural language processing (NLP) has made truly impressive progress in recent years and is being deployed in an ever-increasing range of user-facing settings. Accompanied by this progress has been a growing realization of inequities in the performance of naively-trained NLP models for users of different demographics, with minorities typically experiencing lower performance levels.

Pull US AI Research Out of China
This piece was updated Aug. 11 to add information from Google. Recently, the Biden administration and a host of allies called out China for its massive Microsoft Exchange hack (among others), and threatened strengthened cyber defense measures and continued exposure of the PRC's malicious cyber activity. But despite a lot of hard talk about securing America's cyber defenses, action is wanting, and the government has failed to address a glaring boon to the PRC's cyber capabilities: our own companies' AI research centers in China. Housing the AI research labs of America's cutting-edge tech companies in authoritarian China was never a good idea. But given that the Chinese government uses foreign tech companies to help find and exploit security vulnerabilities, and that it is claiming ever more control over tech companies' operations and data, it looks more objectionable than ever. AI is an increasingly crucial element of cyber security and hacking, and Xi Jinping's China has demonstrated time and time again that China's high-tech sector serves the CCP, which sees AI technology in particular as a core tool of its future autocratic rule.

The untold story of GPT-3 is the transformation of OpenAI
A bot that writes letters on behalf of nature. Those are just some of the recent stories written about GPT-3, the latest contraption of artificial intelligence research lab OpenAI. GPT-3 is the largest language model ever made, and it has triggered many discussions over how AI will soon transform many industries. But what has been less discussed is how GPT-3 has transformed OpenAI itself. In the process of creating the most successful natural language processing system ever created, OpenAI has gradually morphed from a nonprofit AI lab to a company that sells AI services. And hanging in the balance is the very mission for which OpenAI was founded.

7 AI Research Labs in Europe Leading the Data Science Community
In the past, we've highlighted some West Coast AI research labs that we think are doing some really incredible work. Now, in an attempt to look past the dominating presence of Silicon Valley, we're turning our focus overseas and taking a closer look at some of the cutting-edge Europe AI research labs. Founded in 2015, the Alan Turing Institute is a fairly new research lab with a unique structure. Located within the British Library in London, it's a national institute comprised of 13 universities and the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council. This structure creates an environment that promotes collaborate across disciplines.

Eight U of T artificial intelligence researchers named CIFAR AI Chairs
Eight University of Toronto artificial intelligence researchers – four of whom are women – have been named CIFAR AI Chairs, a recognition of pioneering work in areas that could have global societal impact. One of the new chairs is Anna Goldenberg, an associate professor of computer science in U of T's Faculty of Arts & Science and the first-ever chair in biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence at the Hospital for Sick Children. She and her colleagues, including U of T's Dr. Peter Laussen, have developed a computer model that uses signals in physiological data, such as a patient's pulse, to detect an oncoming heart attack – giving doctors and nurses vital minutes to intervene and save an infant's life. The early-warning system has been able to predict 70 per cent of heart attacks at least five minutes – and up to 15 minutes – before a patient's heart stops beating. "In machine learning and health care, the key word is prevention," says Goldenberg, whose team is on track to have the system tested in a silent trial in a clinical environment.
